An attempted purse snatching outside Eli Cannon's on Saturday night led to the arrest of a 63-year-old man.
Police report that an officer on routine patrol at 10:30 p.m. saw two women in a violent struggle against a man later identified as James Astromowicz. The officer pulled over, when another male bystander and the two women called out for help, saying Astromowicz was trying to steal a purse owned by one of the women.
Police say the suspect ran. After making sure the women were all right, the officer asked them to stay put and pursued the suspect.
The suspect was caught on Spring Street; the women subsequently identified the man, Astromowicz, as the attempted purse snatcher, police say. They also say he admitted to the crime, explaining he was homeless and needed to support his addiction to crack cocaine.
Astromowicz was charged with criminal attempt to commit robbery in the third degree, third-degree assault, second-degree breach of peace and second-degree criminal mischief. He was held on $150,000 bond and scheduled for a March 11 court date.
Police say one of the women had cuts and scrapes on her hands; her shirt and purse were also torn.
