Polish Social Club Board Member Charged With Assault of Girlfriend

Middletown Police say a city man put a female in a headlock and punched her in the face after both argued in a car after spending the evening drinking at a Middlefield bar.

A member of the board of directors of a Middlefield Polish social club is facing an assault charge after Middletown Police say he put his girlfriend in a headlock and punched her in the face after both spent the evening drinking at the Kosciuszko Club.

On Dec. 11 at 2:12 a.m., police were called to a home on Jefferson Avenue in which a victim's hands were shaking, tears streaming down her face and suffering from a cut lip.

The report says she admitted she and her boyfriend, Michael E. Koba, 45, of Jefferson Avenue, had been drinking at the "K" [Tadeusz Kosciuszko] Club in the Rockfall section of Middlefield earlier and had fought in the car.

Both smelled of alcohol, police say, and admitted to fighting over people the victim had been talking to at the club. The report says she tried to open the door of the car to exit and walk home four times, each of which Koba reached over and slammed the door shut, then put her in a head lock and "punched her with a closed fist in the face."

Koba, who had a scratch on his neck and face, the report indicates, told officers he was attacked unprovoked and couldn't explain his girlfriend's injuries.
He was charged with third-degree assault.

Last December, Koba was arrested following a similar incident with a woman in which police described both as being "heavily drunk."

According to the K-Club's website, Michael Koba is a member of the board of directors of the Polish social club.

My family was very active in the 'K-club". Many found memories of Christmas parties, learning how to dance (traditional Polish), card tournements and nights out dancing. This incident is does not reflect what the K-Club once was-it is too bad. Deb Kleckowski

This is NO suprise to the people who go to the club regularly. Anyone who knows this couple knows what a toxic relationship it is and the excessive alcohol abuse only makes it 10x worse. Unfortunately, this isn't the first, second - or even third - time that this type of incident has happened between these two after a night of drinking at the club. It's unfortunate that the club receives bad publicity because of these two individuals who can't get their lives straightened out - not to mention that it makes the bartenders look like they just serve people until they are drunk out of their minds....and not for nothing, but it's obvious that this couple drove home intoxicated and yet there was NO arrest for a DUI...just sayin'...

The bartenders at the K-Club do serve their patrons until they are stumbling drunk. I have seen this personally, in fact these people will go up to another bar in middlefield to drink more but the bartenders there are smart enough to not serve them.
