Middletown Police say 24-year-old Abniel Velazquez drove the wrong way down Main Street for 50 feet and nearly hit an officer's cruiser head-on.

A 24-year-old city man was charged with driving under the influence with a blood alcohol level more than three times the legal limit last week, after Middletown Police say he drove the wrong way down Main Street for 50 feet, nearly hitting a cruiser head-on.

On Oct. 28 at 1:06 a.m., Abniel Velazquez, of Washington Street, New Britain, was driving a Ford Explorer on Main Street when he suddenly changed lanes, the police report states, driving in the wrong direction for 50 feet, then came within 25 feet of striking a cruiser head-on.

The officer reported the driver had slurred speech, glassy, bloodshot eyes and smelled of alcohol. A breathalyzer test revealed .241 and .235 blood alcohol levels.
