PD: Man Fought With Girlfriend, Smashed Her iPad

The 24-year-old city man allegedly told officers he thought he could break it since he had gotten it for her as a Christmas gift.

SECOND-DEGREE BREACH OF PEACE, SECOND-DEGREE CRIMINAL MISCHIEF — On March 4 at 10:25 p.m., police were called to a domestic in which a woman victim said her boyfriend, Javon J. Mathis, 24, of Ridgefield Drive, broke her iPad valued at $600, which police say he bought her for Christmas, and pushed her into a mirror that broke, after arguing with him over his work. She said he kept smashing the iPad until it broke. The report says “she wants the relationship over for her protection.” Mathis confirmed the story, saying she made a comment that “set him off,” but denied pushing her. The report says Mathis thought he could smash the iPad because he bought it.

FIVE COUNTS RISK OF INJURY TO CHILD, DISORDERLY CONDUCT, SECOND-DEGREE ASSAULT — On March 4 at 1:30 p.m., Taishaun Mierez, 19, of Harvard Street, Hartford, was served with an outstanding warrant on Main Street. He was identified by his mother, police say.

DISORDERLY CONDUCT, THIRD-DEGREE ASSAULT — On March 4 at 1:30 p.m., police were called on a domestic to the home of Roberto Vargas, 31, of West Street, who appeared to be slightly drunk, police say. Inside was a woman who spoke only Spanish shaking uncontrollably and crying in a locked bedroom, the report says. She told police she arrived home from work and Vargas, her live-in boyfriend, accused her of having an affair with the upstairs neighbor. He swore at her several times and grabbed her by the hair and smashed her face into the wall, police say, and punched her with a closed fist. The report says she ran into the bedroom of her three children who were asleep and locked herself in and called 911. She told officers he had assaulted her in the past and threatened to beat her if she called police. 

TWO COUNTS SECOND-DEGREE FAILURE TO APPEAR, SECOND-DEGREE BREACH OF PEACE — On March 3 at 9:45 p.m., police were called to the driveway of Benjamin Smith, 45, of Fowler Avenue on the report of a man playing loud music in his car. Smith was found with three outstanding warrants. At headquarters, police say, Smith was uncooperative and refused to sign his arrest reports.

VIOLATION OF PROTECTIVE ORDER — On March 3 at 10:33 p.m., police were asked to check on a woman at her apartment by her father after he told them Bruce V. Rasted, 45, of Hillside Court was there smoking drugs, had physically abused her in the past and there was a protective order between them, the report says. Police say the door had no handle only a deadbolt and they called six times for someone to answer then entered. The television was on, the report says, and Rasted was hiding in the closed. He told them he had trouble with people kicking in his door and tried to call the woman to no avail. State Police records show he has multiple convictions for failure to appear, possession of narcotics, unlawful restraint and breach of peace.

DISORDERLY CONDUCT — On March 2 at 9:12 p.m., police were called to an apartment building on Broad Street where a woman told me she was at a friend’s place and her boyfriend of nine months, Jerry Baron, 46, of Columbia Street, yelled at her that she wasn’t home, grabbed her by the face and pushed her, ripping an earring from her ear, the report says. Police say her ear was bleeding. Baron was inside, intoxicated, the report says, and told police they argued over a cell phone, but denied ripping her earring out. Police say he has an extensive criminal history, including numerous assaults, breach of peace and robbery.

OPERATE UNREGISTERED VEHICLE, ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF MOTOR VEHICLE NUMBER PLATE, INSURANCE COVERAGE FAILS MINIMUM — On Feb. 27 at 1:40 p.m., police were in the Stop & Shop parking lot on East Main Street when a 1998 Ford Contour drove in operated by Fatbardh Latifi, 32, of Liberty Street without a front license plate. The plate on the rear was reported stolen. Police say Latifi went inside the store; when returning he told police he had found the plate.

WITHOUT MINIMUM INSURANCE — On March 1, Rocky Hill Police charged Kimberly Anne Price, 38, of 59 Russet Lane, Middletown.
