Alert: Police Warn of Phone Scam Targeting Spanish-Speaking Victims

The phone call targets Hispanic people with an individual allegedly from Connecticut Light & Power saying too much voltage is being drawn from the victim's home from a local transformer.

In the last month, the New Britain Police Department has received numerous complaints regarding a phone scam targeting the Hispanic population.

The scam involves a caller speaking Spanish to the victim and saying he or she is a representative of Connecticut Light & Power.

The caller tells the victim that CL&P has detected too much voltage being drawn from their home from a local transformer which needs to be fixed immediately.  The victim is advised that if the transformer is not fixed quickly, a fire will occur in their home.
