MxCC & Westbrook High School Sign Agreement for College Courses Offered at High School

Starting this January, Middlesex Community College will offer college courses at Westbrook High School.  To signify the start of this new collaboration, Westbrook legislators and administration from Middlesex Community College and Westbrook Public Schools came together this morning to sign a partnership agreement.

Senator Art Linares, Westbrook’s First Selectman Noel Bishop, Robert Hale, principal of Westbrook High School, Patricia Ciccone, superintendent of Westbrook Public Schools, and Anna Wasescha, president of Middlesex Community College were present for the document signing.

MxCC is not new to the shoreline. Since 1983, the College has offered courses in Old Saybrook, and later, in Clinton. “Course offerings have dwindled over the years on the shoreline,” said Mensimah Shabazz, director of academic initiatives.  “However, community demand prompted a conversation with administration at Westbrook High School. It was the right time to revamp course offerings at a new location.”

“We applaud officials at Middlesex Community College for restarting the College’s presence here on the shoreline,” said Sen. Art Linares (R-Westbrook), who was instrumental in making this partnership happen. “This is great news for area students from towns like Clinton, Westbrook and Old Saybrook. Through its quality and affordable programs, MxCC is committed to helping students succeed.  We want students to learn here, live here and work here, and expanded offerings like this will move us further toward that goal.”

“Expanding to Westbrook was the right choice for us as a college,” said Dr. Steven Minkler, dean of academic affairs.  “We are happy to be back on the shoreline.  We anticipate strong enrollment and hope to make this a long-term offering for our students.”

To make registration easier for residents of the shoreline area, administration is planning an advising and registration day in the coming month at Westbrook High School. For more information, or to register for courses, visit mxcc.edu/shoreline.
