Community Corner

Another Idea for Danforth Pewter Shop

Our readers have weighed in with some really promising ideas for saving this building, which is suffering from neglect

Here is yet another idea from a reader for the Danforth Pewter Shop.

Would Midpoint (Middlesex Mutual Assurance Co.) be willing to have it placed at the corner of College and Broad streets at the southern end of their property? This would bring the building a little closer to its original location (on College Street, where Farmers and Mechanics now has its parking lot), and would enliven an otherwise empty corner.

As for uses, the building could be a museum for Middlesex Mutual Assurance (one of the oldest insurance companies in the country), housing a permanent exhibit of some of the company's treasures. Or it could serve as an office for the Downtown Business District or as a regional office for tourism.

This building became a rallying point for local preservationists and was saved from the wrecking ball in the late 1970s. Kept in storage for many years, it was erected at its current site in the 1980s with the help of preservationists, the city and community leaders.

Thomas Danforth made pewter teapots, mugs, plates, baby spoons, and such, and was considered one of the best at his trade in the colonies.

This building ought to be saved. Thanks, everyone, for your ideas. I hope the city is listening.
