Middletown High Coach John Skubel, Hall of Famer Dies at 73

His 1984 Woodrow Wilson Middle School team was undefeated and was named the No. 1 team in the state. The football stadium at MHS is named for him.

Former Middletown High School football coach John Skubel, 73, passed away Saturday morning after battling cancer for nine years. Skubel led Woodrow Wilson to two state title games, then led MHS to five more championship games, winning three in 1984, 1987 and 1992.

His 1984 team was undefeated and was named the No. 1 team in the state. The football stadium at MHS is named for him. 

He was elected into the Middletown Sports of Hall of Fame in 2000.

According to the Middletown Sports Hall of Fame, his overall head coaching record was 137 wins, 63 losses, five ties. Skubel won three state championships, nine conference championships. 

The wake will be Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Stempien Funeral Home on Broad St. in Meriden. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church in Meriden Wednesday.
