'Cal' Vecchitto, of Middletown's Large Italian Ice Family, Dies at 91

Brother of Middletown's "Joe Slush," Cal spent 60 summers working in the family business at Sound View Beach in Old Lyme happily serving cold treats to beachgoers.

Columbo "Cal" Vecchitto, 91, a lifelong resident of Middletown, died June 6, according to Legacy.com.

For 60 years, Cal ran Vecchitto's Froze-Rite at Sound View Beach in Old Lyme, doling out scoops of the family's beloved "secret recipe" Italian ice, which can still be enjoyed in Middletown at 323 deKoven Drive.
