Mercy Students to Attend Laurel Girls’ State

Eight outstanding members from Mercy High School's Class of 2013 have been selected to represent their school and town as delegates to the 2012 Laurel Girls’ State.

Sr. Mary A. McCarthy, Principal of , is pleased to announce that eight outstanding members from the Class of 2013 have been selected to represent Mercy High School as delegates to the 2012 American Legion Auxiliary Laurel Girls’ State.

Laurel Girls’ State is a program for high school juniors interested in the electoral process and legislative functions of the government.  Candidates are selected on the basis of scholarship, leadership, citizenship, friendliness, and good sportsmanship.  Beginning June 28, participants from Connecticut High Schools will spend a week together  at Eastern Connecticut State University, exploring the process of how our state and local governments function.  Each young woman will be given the opportunity to enhance her public speaking and leadership skills while acquiring knowledge on all phases of creating and running a working democratic form of state and local government. They will have the opportunity to run for various political offices, write and present bills, and listen to presentations from various state dignitaries.

Miss Sara Richardson, daughter of Spencer and Maria Richardson of Durham;

Miss Kerry Egan, daughter of Julia and Timothy Egan of Durham;

Miss Alexandra Femc, daughter of Mrs. Joanne and Anthony Femc  of Middletown;

Miss Katherine Saia, daughter of Patricia and Antonio Saia of Wallingford;

and Miss Patricia Socarras, daughter of Haydee and Efrain Socarras of Northford, CT.
