Mercy Seniors Honored as SCC Scholar Leaders

Two Mercy High School Seniors received SCC Scholar Leader Awards

Two Mercy High School Seniors were recently honored by being named Southern Connecticut Conference Scholar Leaders.  Mercy’s honorees are Samantha Formica, daughter of Joseph Formica of Middletown and Meghan Nelson, daughter of Christopher and Eileen Nelson of East Hampton.

The SCC selected 44 outstanding students from the member schools to receive this year’s Scholar Leader Award.  The students have demonstrated outstanding scholarship and leadership in their schools and in their communities. Samantha Formica is a highly motivated and diligent student who has taken on leadership roles as President of both the National Honor Society and Italian Club.  She is a role model for others as she balances her responsibilities as a student leader with her dedication to service.

Samantha has given our 200 hours of service to working with the Middlesex Youth Association for Retarded Citizens (MYARC), been a faithful member of Show Choir, Mercy Ambassadors, and SADD. Her academic awards include the Bryant University Book Award, Honors US History Award and awards in Geometry  and Chemistry.

Mrs. Bullock, Principal of Mercy High School stated, “Samantha is an example of a scholar leader who is a woman of poise, maturity and integrity.  She has set high goals for herself and achieved them.  Her quiet and steady leadership has served Mercy High School well and will serve her well into the future.” Samantha plans to attend Springfield College with a major in Physical Therapy.

Meghan Nelson is an extraordinary student who is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society where she has the role of Vice-President.  Meghan is a distinguished volleyball player on Mercy’s Varsity Volleyball Team where she serves as its captain and has been recognized by the SCC as an extraordinary student athlete.

Meghan has received a number of departmental awards and the Wellesly College Book Award.  Meghan is also an enthusiastic participant in clubs such as Helping Hands, Helping Paws; Random Acts of Kindness; and Mercy Ambassadors.  Her volunteer service with the Musulo-Skeletal Transplant Foundations in particular is a great reflection on her gifts as a math and science student but also her caring nature.  “Meghan is a talented and well-rounded student leader who is competitive, confident, and focused.

Meghan strives for excellence and will do what it takes to achieve her goals,” stated Mrs. Bullock.  Meghan has a full academic scholarship to attend Iona College where she will also be a member of their Women’s Volleyball team.  Her plan is to be in the pre-med program with a major in Biology.

Founded in 1994, the Southern Connecticut Conference (SCC) is in its 19th year with 22 member schools and nearly 23,000 students.  Recognized as the premier athletic league in the state of Connecticut, SCC member schools have captured over 300 state championships since the league’s inception.  More importantly, the SCC is recognized for its outstanding non-athletic programs and events.
