Seeing Middletown Anew Through Artists' Eyes

Visiting the Art for Haiti Art Exhibition at ArtSpace in Hartford provides a glimpse into the beauty that is all around us right here in Middletown CT.

Life is such a funny thing. I have been all over the world, seeking out sunsets, if you will, under different skies. And here in front of me at the Art for Haiti Art Exhibition in Hartford were photographs of sunsets taken a mere five minutes away from my house. How incredible. Each one stunning and different and shiny and new. Who knew?

Who knew what I had been seeking could indeed be found right here at home. My friends always told me I would find everything I needed right here. And I never believed them. Ever. I'd listen and dismiss their words in my mind. Right as they were talking I'd tune them out and think to myself, They don't know what they're talking about. They've never walked along the Thames and seen the sunset over St. Paul's or spent the day out on the moors. No, they simply don't know as they've never experienced it themselves.

And so to be presented with the photographic evidence of the beauty to be found right here in Middletown Connecticut was indeed an epiphany. The words of T. S. Eliot from the Four Quartets resonated in my mind:

We shall not cease from exploration

And the end of all our exploring

Will be to arrive where we started

And know the place for the first time.

The show runs through Saturday at Artspace Hartford, 555 Asylum Ave., Hartford.
