Middletown Rotary Club honors two high school students for the extraordinary volunteerism!

Katherine “Kasey” Scibilia, a junior at Coginchaug Regional High School, and Erin Hutchinson, a junior at Haddam-Killingworth High School, were selected by the for the 2012 Service Above Self Awards.

Since 1910, the Motto of Rotary has been “Service Above Self,” and the Middletown club annually recognizes a local student(s) who encourage and foster the ideal of service in their community. Both recipients were given $200 from the Middletown Rotary to donate to a local charity; Scibilia chose St. Vincent de Paul in Middletown and Hutchinson selected the Art Center at Killingworth.

Scibilia, a National Honor Society student, has volunteered for Durham/Middlefield Youth and Family Services, the Children’s Museum in West Hartford, and has been a very active member of her church community offering her time and talents as a Sunday school teacher and assisting with a variety of outreach programs.  Scibilia has demonstrated her leadership abilities when she organized a fundraiser for Amazing Grace Food Pantry and St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen and with the help of family and friends raised over $2,000 in a two-day Valentine “Sweet-Sale.”  According to her Principal Andre Hauser, “she is the poster girl for going above and beyond in not only service but also in her personal life,” Hauser stated.
