The announced that William E. Currlin of Middlefield has been selected as the 2012 recipient of the William J. Pomfret Veteran Community Service Award. The award will be officially presented at the 11th Annual Support the Troops/Honor the Veterans’ Member Breakfast Meeting Nov. 5 at the Crowne Plaza Cromwell.
Mr. Currlin, a veteran of the United States Army who served in Vietnam, has engaged in a variety of community service initiatives in the Town of Middlefield. He was a member of the Board of Education for the Region 13 School District from 1994-2011, and served as Chairman of the ACES Board of Governors during that same period. He was the Co-Founder of Project Graduation, an initiative that promotes a safe and healthy graduation experience for high school students that is free of alcohol and drugs, and has been a Justice of the Peace for over 40 years.
Currlin also dedicates himself to veterans’ affairs by serving on the St. Luke’s Elder Care Board of Directors Vets4Vets program, administering the Wounded Warrior Project, and serving as Veteran Chairman of the Middletown Elks, just to name a few. He is a member of the America Legion Post #75, VFW in Middlefield, and is a life member of the Vietnam Veterans. He is also Co-Founder and Partner of The Town Times, a weekly newspaper that covers Durham and Middlefield.
Currlin lives in Middlefield with his wife Nancy. They have a daughter, Jenna-Brynn Currlin.
Currlin is one of those truly special people in Middlesex County. This prestigious award, which is chosen each year by a committee of its previous recipients, is a testament to not only his service to our country, but his ongoing commitment to the people of Middlefield and Middlesex County.

The William J. Pomfret Veteran Community Service Award is presented annually to a Veteran of the United States Armed Forces who has shown a selfless commitment to community and public service in Middlesex County.

Larry Marino of Middletown, 2004-Robert Wamester of Middletown, 2005-Jack Monahan of Essex, 2006-Philip Cacciola of Middletown, 2007-Arthur Lerner of Middletown, 2008-Richard Anderson of Cromwell, 2009-Ronald Organek of Middletown, 2010-John Krasnitski of East Hampton, and 2011-Peter Galgano of Berlin.
