Loaned Executives help stretch your donations further

Each fall, when large numbers of local workplaces hold their annual United Way campaigns, local companies loan or sponsor temporary employees called Loaned Executives to help us raise visibility and funds for the community. This allows United Ways to keep fundraising and administrative costs low so we can put more resources back into the community.

Historically, employees have been loaned from local companies, hence the name, but in recent years, we have seen more companies who prefer to sponsor an employee. This program brings positive visibility to the sponsoring companies, which are recognized throughout the campaign at various events and other forums. It also allows United Ways to be more efficient, stretching your donations further.

When companies loan an employee, that person returns to his or her company with new and enhanced skills and an expanded network. Through the Loaned Executive program, employees learn skills like sales and new business development, networking with local businesses, public speaking, goal setting, problem solving and team building.

Last year, we had two Loaned Executives, Audrey Livingston, sponsored by Middlesex Hospital and Sheryl Dougherty, sponsored by Aetna and Pratt & Whitney. This year, we are thrilled that Middlesex Hospital has signed on as a sponsor once again, and we are lucky to have Audrey Livingston back for her sixth campaign with us. Audrey is retired after 27 years at Middlesex Hospital, where she served as director of the Volunteer Services department.

We recently interviewed Audrey for a blog post, and she said this about her experience: “I like all of the pieces connected to United Way and all of the people you meet as a result. Also, I’m an advocate for the United Way message. The monies are used locally, and there’s a lot of thought that goes into how the monies are invested—and we are seeing results and change. Every little bit helps. It contributes to making a big difference.”
