Garden Seedling Alert: Frost Warning Overnight for Middlesex County

With temperatures predicted to be in the 30s early Tuesday morning in Middletown, gardeners are urged to protect their delicate plants or bring them indoors to avoid damage.

The National Weather Service has issued a frost advisory for Connecticut, including northern Middlesex County from 2 to 8 a.m. on Tuesday. Temperatures will be in the middle 30s, which could damage and kill sensitive outdoor plants, according to the NWS.

An advisory means frost is possible. NBC Connecticut is reporting the overnight low will be 35 degrees here in Middletown.

WTNH's WXedge meteorologist Gil Simmons says the chance of areas of Middletown being hit by frost "depends if you're in valley or on a hilltop" and "patchy clouds may allow for some to miss out on a heavy frost."

The Red Dirt Ramblings blog has some terrific ideas on how to protect your seedlings from frost, including plastic sheeting secured with rocks, terra-cotta pots turned upside down over plants, bell jars or other glass jars, and even fabric, which requires you set up supports like stakes so its weight doesn't crush plants.
