"Celebration of Peace: Africa"

The nonprofit group Artists for World Peace is to host its “Celebration of Peace: Africa,” at the Wadsworth Mansion in Middletown, Connecticut, on Thursday, May 1, from 6 to 10 PM. The benefit event features African cuisine, an art auction of African-inspired work, music, and dance.

Mayor Dan Drew will be in attendance to officially proclaim May 1st as “Artists for World Peace Day” in the city of Middletown. Artists for World Peace has just been recognized with the Arts Advocacy Award from the city.

Tickets for the event, which are on sale now, will support the group’s fourth trip to Tanzania, where Artists for World Peace provides housing and education for orphans. This August the group will be joined by Middlesex Community College professor Raymond Dennis, Dr. Carol Gordon, and eyeglass technicians who will operate an eye clinic in the new community health center that AFWP helped build in the village of Kibosho Umbwe. Their goal is to examine 100 patients per day.

The May 1 event will feature performances by Jocelyn Pleasant and the Manding Troubadours, Abraham Adzenyah and his West African Brass and Drum Ensemble, and Sankofa Kuumba Dance Ensemble. An open bar (beer and wine), appetizers, Moroccan dishes, and an African BBQ station are included in the ticket price of $100.
