Tavern Signs: Art and Advertising in Early America
Treasured today as examples of folk art, tavern and inn signs of the 18th and 19th centuries were part of the local landscape in America. Such signs incorporated eye-catching symbols designed to attract business, both from locals and travelers. These establishments provided not simply food and lodging (for man and horse), but also entertainment, and a place to meet and exchange news of the day.
Richard C. Malley, Head of Research and Collections, will share stories of taverns and inns in a program featuring examples from the Connecticut Historical Society’s unparalleled sign collection.
Program presented by the Portland Historical Society and the Connecticut Historical Society. All are welcome and refreshments will be served.
