The Tenth Annual Juried Art Exhibition presented by The Art Guild of Middletown is taking place at the Center for the Arts, Wesleyan University, Ezra and Cecile Zilkha South Gallery. Awards were presented at the Reception which was held Friday from 7pm to 9pm. The Juror, Constance Kilgore, received her B.F.A. from University of Colorado and her Master of Arts from New York University. Her work has been exhibited in groups and solo shows in England, Estonia and throughout the United States.

Best in Show was awarded to Mieke Keane for her Gouache titled “Going Home”.  “Moody, evocative and yet whimsical, this dusky landscape has an element of surprise in the bright watery marsh and the charming rendering of sheep”, Ms. Kilgore commented.

First Place was awarded to Christine Ivers for her Pastel, “Venetian Glass”. Juror Kilgore stated, “This is a beautifully rendered Venetian nocturne with strong composition and effective presentation. The earthy warm tones are reminiscent of the limited palette often used by the old masters”.

Second Place went to Carole Johnson for “African Song”, a mixed media composition. The Judge’s comment was “This bold composition has strong visual impact and demands attention, inviting the viewer to study its structure, discover the subtle nuances within”.

Third Place was awarded to Robert Spooner for his oil painting, “Passing Weather”. “A lush landscape with glorious light; one can almost feel the damp shadows cast by the looming clouds. If I haven’t already been there, it’s somewhere I’d like to go!” said Ms. Kilgore.

Monetary and gift awards donated by local businesses and supporters were also awarded.

The Art Guild of Middletown wishes to express appreciation to Wesleyan University for its generosity in making the South Gallery available to us. The Guild also would like to thank Constance Kilgore for her time and expertise and Alexis Meurs, flautist, for sharing her musical talent at the Reception.

The Exhibition, free of charge and open to the public, continues through June 15th. Zilkha Gallery Hours are 12 noon to 4 pm.
