Have You Seen? Democratic Primary Winner Now Has Two Campaign Signs

When Middletown zoning board candidate Stephen Devoto earned a spot on his party's ticket for Election Day, he also got a handful of brand new lawn signs.

'Tis the season for campaign signs — when the physical landscape of Middletown is dotted with evidence of its political leanings.

Driving around the city, we've seen more and more pop up on lawns and common areas in the last week, as Election Day looms.

They can't be missed as one motors along the road and the eye catches a series of names and a color —  blue/white for Democrats and red/white for Republicans. Then are the greens for planning and zoning candidates Stephen Smith and Stephen Devoto, the royal blue/white/eggplant of Middletown First! candidates Joseph Bibisi and Phil Pessina, and the occasional giant, head-turning, "Vote Row A, Checks & Balances," Middletown GOP ones that look like enormous ballots.

We admit we're pretty impressed when we come upon a bipartisan lawn.

Over in the Westfield section of Middletown today, we spotted a sight that prompted a bit of head scratching — a blue Middletown Democrats sign with Devoto's name above Mayor Dan Drew's.

Devoto's green and white "Planning for all of Middletown" signs have been out since before the Sept. 10 Democratic primary in which he challenged town committee-endorsed candidates Robert Blanchard, Paul Turenne and Dan Russo and came in first place.

Once he won the primary and a spot on the Democratic ticket, the party embraced Devoto as a candidate alongside Russo and Blanchard, which is how Devoto got some of the new signs. The party prints up about 50 for each common council candidate, Devoto says, and P&Z hopefuls got eight each.

He says he has a few more if any supporters would like a couple for their lawn.
