Wesleyan Students Kicked Out of Science Center

The center asked the students to leave on Friday because of "unruly behavior."

Some Wesleyan University students were asked to leave the Connecticut Science Center in Hartford on Friday after center staff determined they had become unruly, the Hartford Courant reports.

About 500 students were at the center Friday night and the students were asked to leave after about two hours because of "unruly behavior," Tracy Shirer, the center's director of media and public relations told the newspaper.

A posting Saturday on the university blog wesleying.org says this about the incident:

"Last night, around 7:30 p.m., a few hundred well-oiled members of the Class of 2013 piled into buses outside of Usdan, headed—unbeknownst to passengers—to the Connecticut Science Center in Hartford. Two hours later, a drunker, louder, and scientifically inspired Class of 2013 was herded onto the same buses and driven right back to Middletown. The “Freaks and Geeks, Valentine’s Day style”-themed evening—which cost $40 and made for the third senior event of the year—wasn’t supposed to end abruptly in less than two hours, but according to one student who overheard an exchange between museum staffers and Wesleyan coordinators, the ejection may have been well earned."

The blog also includes a poll on the incident which asks:

Why do you think the seniors got kicked out of (the science center) on Friday?

  • Too much sex in the bathroom.
  • Too much barf on the stairs.
  • Someone was doing coke.
  • Someone spilled beer on the DJ.
  • Nudity in the sound exhibit.
  • Uh, I blacked out...

Wouldnt surprise me, look how they act on campus. They have NO respect for the community they live in. Why would they when they are out of town.

When I first heard about this I had to shake my head, it's bad enough to have to drive through them disobeying crossing walks, especially at 11:00pm on their party nights, they have to represent an esteemed college like this out in public. The dean of Wesleyan should be so proud. Just goes to show that college students shouldn't be allowed out of their "party element" their grade school counterparts are more mature. I hope the school is going to reimburse the beautiful science center for cleaning up after this incident. As well as the science center never letting them do this again.

From the Daily Beast: So does this episode mean that Wesleyan is filled with obnoxious drunks? Of course not. Unless you also think the school is filled with creative geniuses, saints, and future NFL Hall of Fame candidates because notable Wes graduates in the headlines recently include Academy Award nominee Behn Zeitlan '04 for Best Director; charity founder Kennedy Odede '12, featured on NBC Nightly News for his tireless work in the largest slum in Africa; and NFL coach Bill Belichick '75. If you're not prepared to say Wesleyan is an amazing school based on the success of a few, at least avoid the hypocrisy of condemning for the entire school because a handful of students behaved badly.
