New: Snow Falling But Not Much Accumulation

Middletown looks to get between 2 and 5 inches of snow beginning this afternoon before it turns to sleet and freezing rain through Thursday.

Still not much accumulation, but the temperature has hit 31 degrees which means conditions are ripe for freezing rain.

Snow began falling rapidly at noon Wednesday although with the temperature in Middletown at 32 degrees, there is no accumulation. cancelled all activities and some merchants on Main and Washington streets have begun to salt the roadways.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and Lieutenant Gov. Nancy Wyman partially activated the state’s Emergency Operations Center at noon today in advance of a winter storm expected to bring a mix of snow, sleet, ice, and rain to the state. Forecasts indicate the storm will impact the evening commute with snow accumulating in the central and northern portions of Connecticut.

A wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain is headed our way, according to the National Weather Service, which has issued a winter weather advisory from noon to 10 p.m. Middletown is forecast to get 2-5 inches of snow beginning between 1 and 4 p.m., coming in from the west.

A winter weather advisory means snow, sleet and freezing rain will cause dangerous travel conditions, according to the NWS. There may be pockets of freezing rain this afternoon and evening, before 9 p.m., the NWS reports, and it will change to all rain by Thursday after 8 a.m.

Middletown has issued a parking ban effective at noon today. Three municipal lots will be open for off-street parking: the corner of Washington and Broad streets, Broad Street across from Russell Library, and Melilli Plaza.

and Vinal Technical High School are dismissing early today in anticipation of the storm. Middletown High School will dismiss at 10:45 a.m., Woodrow Wilson and Keigwin middle schools will dismiss at 11:45 a.m., all elementary schools will dismiss at 12:45 p.m.

Mercy High School will dismiss students at 12:20 p.m. Out-of-town busses will leave Mercy at 12:20 p.m. Today's Xavier High School hockey game at Notre Dame of Fairfield is postponed. The make-up is March 1 at 6 p.m. at the Milford Ice Pavilion. Xavier dismisses at 11:45 a.m. Roadside Academy will dismiss students on a half-day schedule.

The free Rob Nevins weight-loss seminar at Wesley School tonight is cancelled due to snow forecast. Tonight's Wesleyan University 2012 Annie Sonnenblick Lecturer Colum McCann talk has been cancelled.
