Meyer: Hammonassett Beach to Get Facelift

State Sen. Edward Meyer (D), who represents Durham and Killingworth, announced that the State Bond Commission is expected to approve a combined $850,000 in state grants for improvements to Hammonasset Beach State Park, including the construction of new toilet buildings, a portion of the Hammonasset boardwalk, a new dune to combat erosion, and to finance the design of a new Hammonasset Beach Nature Center.

The State Bond Commission is scheduled to approve the bonding when it meets at 10:30 a.m. this Friday in Room 1-E of the Legislative Office Building in Hartford.

“In my first few months as a state senator I voted for the bonding package that authorized these investments,” said Meyer, who is Senate Chairman of the Environment Committee. “Hammonasset had two million visitors last year, so obviously it’s an enormously popular beach and state park that the public has come to rely on for rest and relaxation. The very least we can do is maintain the park and make occasional improvements to satisfy the public and to protect our investment.”

Hammonasset is Connecticut’s largest shoreline park, with over two miles of beach. Activities include bicycling, boating, fishing, hiking, picnicking and swimming. The park has over 550 campsites available.
