Family Project: Plant An Herb Garden

Look no further than your windowsill for fresh, delicious goodness.

Nothing is more local, fresher, or yummier than your own home-grown herbs. And what a great project to involve the kids in!

If, like my family, your summer meals involve lots of salads and lots of pasta (hello, basil pesto and Insalata Caprese!), growing your own can save you both time and money. And kids will love watching their herb garden grow.

There are so many teachable aspects of growing your own herb garden--including planting, growing, harvesting, drying or storing for future use, measuring, and cooking skills.

As a family you can plan and plant together from seeds or you can buy seedlings already started and re-pot in your own pots (another family project: decorating the pots!). There are even herb garden kits that come with everything you need to get started--just add water!

Let your kids help decide which herbs to grow--don’t forget to include the ones you use most often and try a few new ones too!

Here are few websites to help get you started:
