[UPDATE] Three Winning Mega Millions Tickets Sold

$640 million jackpot winners reside in Illinois, Kansas and Maryland, according to Illinois Lottery official.

If you didn't notice, there was an abundance of people buying Mega Millions tickets Friday. The long lines were hard to miss, whether you were at , the , the or another lottery retailer in the city.

That's because Friday night's winning Mega Millions ticket — the numbers were 2, 4, 23, 38 and 46 with a Mega Ball of 23 — was worth $640 milllion, the highest lottery jackpot in world history.

Friday's jackpot was originally estimated at $476 million, but with stronger than anticipated sales nationwide, it quickly became clear by mid-day that it would be much larger.

The jackpot had been growing since Jan. 24, when Mega Millions had its last winner. The odds of winning the jackpot were higher than one in 176 million. The odds of winning any of the Mega Millions prizes were approximately 1 in 40.

Mega Millions is played in 44 jurisdictions (42 states plus the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands). Drawings are held Tuesdays and Fridays at 11 p.m.
