Hand-hewn, Hammered and Painted: Arts and Crafts of Haiti

Haiti's Back Porch of Middletown supports talented Caribbeans and their families by showcasing and selling exotic wares.

Tucked in between an ice cream shop and a foot care center, across from the police station, is an eclectically curated storefront bursting with vibrant handmade Haitian art.

Haiti's Back Porch, a non-profit run by local volunteers from the Haitian Ministries for the Diocese of Norwich, Inc., carries items imported from this financially impoverished but culturally wealthy Caribbean country.

Shop manager Patty Kantrowitz, who travels twice a year to Haiti to stock this fair-trade store, showed Middletown Patch around, pointing out exotic and striking pieces for sale.
