Large Water Main Break Closes Newfield Through This Evening

A major water main break on Newfield Street in Middletown Wednesday morning forced the closure of a half-mile stretch along Route 3 through tonight as public works, police and fire crews work to repair the damage.

Mayor Dan Drew sent out a Honeywell alert at 1 p.m., telling residents the incident will cause "significant" traffic delays through evening. Newfield Street is closed to traffic from Mile Lane to Tuttle Road while an excavator removes the asphalt in front of the professional building at 909 Newfield St.

In his statement, Drew said "the heavy flow of water beneath the street eroded the roadway and caused the asphalt to buckle."

The break occurred on a 12-inch water main, according to Drew, and 20 homes are temporarily without water — between Mile Lane north to 1075 Newfield St., according to the statement.

Middletown school administrators are working to reroute bus traffic leaving Lawrence Elementary, Keigwin Middle and Middletown High schools.
