Remix Art Project Seeking Visual, Sound Artists for Commissions

The Center for the Arts at Wesleyan University and the MiddletownRemix advisory committee is making a call for artists to submit proposals to design, create and install artworks that contain both visual and audio elements along Main Street in the North End neighborhood of Middletown.

Two $5,000 to $7,000 site-specific, temporary installations will be selected, which is inclusive of artist honorariums and supplies.

These commissions are part of the MiddletownRemix: Hear More, See More festival that will take place on May 11, 2013. Visual and sound artists are required to partner for these commissions and create an installation that incorporates both mediums. All selected works will need to be fully installed by May 8. Installation locations need to be along Main Street between Washington Street and Green Street in Middletown.

MiddletownRemix is a collaborative, place-based sound project that enables participants to develop and express the acoustic identity of Middletown, and to explore and experience the soundscapes of the city. This festival will be a celebration of the community’s work on this project, which began in September of 2012. Read more about this project at middletownremix.org.

Preference will go to Middletown-based artists, but all Connecticut-based artists are eligible to apply. Artists may apply with or without an artist partner from the other medium, but preference will go to submissions that include both a visual and sound artist. If the applicant does not have a partner at the time of application and is selected for a commission, a partner must be chosen within two weeks of accepting the commission otherwise the commission may be revoked. If an artist considers himself both a sound and visual artist, then he may apply as such. Preference will be given to applications that incorporate MiddletownRemix sounds and/or remixes.

The submitted work should be visually arresting and provide a visual anchor to a pedestrian-centered festival. The installation should cause visitors to see and hear a part of the festival route in new ways. The feasibility of realizing the work within the necessary timeframe will be part of the selection process.

Submission Materials:

1. Portfolio of six (6) images of recent work and/or three (3) MP3s of audio works that are a maximum of three (3) minutes in length.
2. An image and/or sound list identifying title, dimensions, materials and date of work.
3. Letter of Application outlining your interest in the project, your proposed project that includes a site drawing and your qualifications.
4. Professional resume/curriculum vitae: artist teams must submit a resume for each member. Please include a professional website if available.
5. Budget – include material expenses and artist honorariums.
6. Three references– names, address, email and telephone numbers.
