As sure as September marks the beginning of autumn leaves changing color, October 1st brings out an abundance of pinks, marking the start of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Last year, EG Salon and Spa in Middletown came up with a unique way to bring awareness to the cause and do some fund-raising as well:  They put a pink streak in clients’ hair for $20 with all proceeds to benefit the Middlesex Hospital Comprehensive Breast Center.  A pink stripe in your hair?  Now that will get attention.

Ellie Gagnon, one of EG Salon’s two owners said “we knew that we wanted to do something for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we just weren’t sure what....Pink lipstick? Pink products? That was boring for us!!”  EG Salon and Spa is known for their cutting edge creativity and commitment to the community. “We feel that the success of our business after only 2 years relies mostly on the people of our community, which is why we are so dedicated to paying it forward.  Our clients helped us develop the positive community culture enjoyed within the salon as well,” she continued.

The idea for The GoPink Project came to Georgi Marino, EG’s other owner, in the middle of the night, as most of her big ideas do.  “I think seeing singer Katy Perry’s blue stripes on the red carpet might have inspired me subliminally.  I thought to myselfpink stripes on the streets of Middletown?  How many people would participate?” Georgi worriedly admitted.

In 2010, the answer surprised everyone.  With a lot of hard work, they surpassed their goal of 50 streaks by the end of October creating a grand total of 200 pink streaks which enabled them to donate over $4000 to Middlesex Hospital’s Comprehensive Breast Center.  “The truth is that breast cancer is top of mind for most people.  Everyone wants to do something because breast cancer affects most lives, male and female alike,” both Georgi and Ellie agreed.

The goal for 2011 is 400 streaks and/or feathers and a donation of $8,000 to the hospital.  If anyone wants to help spread the word, The GoPink Project flyers are available for stores and offices or you can forward this YouTube video to all your friends:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMhZVH9YmkQ .

This is the second year for The GoPink Project.  EG Salon and Spa has set dates to put the pink streaks in clients’ hair:  September 28th, October 2nd, 5th and 12th.  October 2nd is a Sunday and since the salon will be open only for The GoPink Project, it will be a special event with music, hors d’oeuvres and beverages.  More dates may have to be added.

A pink streak or pink feather is $20, with all proceeds to benefit the Middlesex Hospital Comprehensive Breast Center. They want everyone to show their true colors and raise money and awareness for breast cancer.
