Connecticut River Photography Part of Wesleyan's Art For Haiti Benefit

David Bauer's water sunsets are part of the Art for Haiti exhibit at the Zilka Gallery in Middletown. A dozen painters, sculptors and photographers will sell work to benefit Movin' with the Spirit.

On May 21, former Councilman David Bauer, a livelong resident, continued his half-year-long project of photographing the Connecticut River at Middletown. These photographs represent one night's work.

Bauer, looking for a way to visually represent the myriad changes the warmest year on record has had on the region, he turned to the transformative power of sunset, exploring the remarkable variations of Middletown's riverfront.

His work, along with Connecticut painters, sculptors and photographers, are part of a show, Art for Haiti, whose opening reception is June 6 from 5-7 p.m. at the Ezra & Cecile Zilka Gallery, Center for the Arts, Wesleyan University, Middletown.

"There were ominous, heavy storm clouds across northern Connecticut," Bauer writes, "but I went down to the river out of habit. It was not that great of a sunset, but it gave me a chance to work with the 50mm lens, so I might use it better for cemetery photos. This sunset turned out to be one of the most cyan (blue) sunsets I have seen."
