MxCC Employee Sets Men's World Record for Stationary Biking

Trenton Wright of Middlesex Community College took the Guinness Book of World Records challenge and cycled for 12 hours straight last Saturday at the Middletown YMCA — raising $2,500 for both organizations.

Trenton Wright hasn't let seven knee surgeries slow him down — or hamper his ability to raise money for his two favorite causes through bicycle marathons.

Wright, 58, coordinator of Institutional Advancement at Middlesex Community College, set the men's World Record for Farthest Distance on a Static Cycle (Stationary Bike) at 187.13 miles in 12 hours on Feb. 23.

This fundraiser for the Northern Middlesex YMCA and Middlesex Community College Foundation was his second such bicycle benefit. Last year, Wright raised more than $500 for the YMCA during its 5-hour Spin-A-Thon. This year, he's collected about $2,500 which will be split between the YMCA and MxCC Foundation.

The current World Record for 12 hours is held by Fabienne Muller of Switzerland at 201.4 miles. Guinness World Records had said it would entertain opening a 12-hour category for a male if Wright beat Muller's distance. He was ahead of the female record through nine hours.

Wright was on the stationary bike from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The original plan was to set a pace of 17 mph and he actually achieved a 15.59 mph pace over 12 hours. Once finished, Wright said, “it wasn’t pretty and it wasn’t easy.”

"The seat was to be replaced with a proper competitive seat and that did not get done and that caused major problems for my rear that prompted some unanticipated breaks in the 10- to 12-hour time frame.”

Wright is a former Division III cross-country and track athlete for Eastern Connecticut State University. He is a 1976 graduate of ECSU and a 1979 graduate of the University of Connecticut, where he received a master of public administration degree. He resides in Willimantic and Old Lyme and has had a total of seven knee surgeries and has a metal plate and two screws in his right knee.
