Uniting Two Disparate Buildings, Library Courtyard Offers Cool Repose

This now verdant, ivy-covered area marries the onetime Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity and First Federal Saving and Loan Association of Meriden.

What city residents know as the Russell Library is actually two buildings.

The original Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity built in 1834 was purchased and remodeled by Frances Russell in the Roman Gothic style.  It opened on April 5, 1876.

In 1930, the city contributed funds to add the Hubbard wing at the rear of the building, and in 1972, the children’s library, at one time the First Federal Saving and Loan Association of Meriden, was built in 1965.

In 1983, an architectural firm expanded the library and combined these two buildings, forming the inner courtyard now used for outdoor concerts.

This garden area is also a lovely place to sit, enjoy the breezes and crack open a good book.
