The Great Pacifier Debate

Are they safe? What are the pros and cons?

Question: We are preparing to have our first child and have had many family members telling us conflicting stories about the use of pacifiers for our new little one. Our question is: Are they indeed safe to use?

-- Almost parents

Dear Almost Parents, Congratulations on the upcoming birth of your first child! These will be the happiest days of your lives. My first piece of advice is to take every bit of “helpful hints” with a grain of salt. Every parent will tell you something a bit different. You have to go with your own instincts.  All babies have different needs. There have been some studies on pacifier use and some prove it to be healthy for a new born as it helps to prevent SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome); others conclude it confuses babies who are breast fed. Here is an article that I found to be helpful.

Also, I always found that my baby’s pediatrician was very helpful in guiding me in the right direction (always including how I felt).  Best wishes with your little bundle!
