Parents AND Kids Can Get Free, Nutritious Lunches This Summer
Thanks to a End Hunger Connecticut! grant, the Community Renewal Team can offer meals to families in Middletown and Portland.
For the first time, parents will be welcome to enjoy a nutritious meal with their children at four Middlesex locations of the Summer Food Service Program, including three sites in Middletown and one in Portland.
Community Renewal Team explained that the federally funded program was previously able to provide meals only to those who were 18 or younger. However, a grant from End Hunger Connecticut! is allowing CRT to serve meals to parents/guardians accompanying their children.
The Parent Participation grant from EHC! is meant to increase program participation – particularly among very small children who cannot visit the sites by themselves. Program sites may appear inhospitable when they refuse to provide meals to parents who are sitting with their children.

CRT has been an SFSP sponsor for more than 20 years. This summer, the agency is providing summer meals at 27 sites in Colchester, Glastonbury, Enfield, Middletown, Portland and Windsor Locks. Nearly 1,300 meals are prepared daily for SFSP at CRT’s production kitchen in Hartford.
The national SFSP is funded by the US Department of Agriculture and administered in Connecticut by the State Department of Education. It provides free breakfasts, lunches and snacks to low income children who would otherwise be hungry – typically those who are eligible for free and reduced-price meals during the school year. No registration is required. To find a location of a free food site near you, go to http://www.ctsummerfood.org/location-finder or text 877-877.
