Middletown Family Injured in Boston Bombing Tops Most Read Stories of 2013

Emerging cicadas, a meteor shower and extraordinary police news like the Tasering of a middle school student were very popular topics over the past year.

The dramatic story of a Middletown family celebrating the one-year anniversary of the mother's stem cell transplant for bone marrow cancer caught up in the Boston Marathon bombing in April was by far the most popular story on Middletown Patch in 2013.

At 2:50 p.m. on April 15, the second Boston Marathon explosion at the Forum restaurant on Boylston Street blasted shards of glass into Michael Garofalo's head, ruptured both his eardrums, sliced into Amy Garofalo's face and embedded into her hand.

The family was there that day for the Joe Andruzzi Foundation Boston Marathon Watch Party, a fundraiser for cancer patients who have difficulty paying their treatment bills.
