Hurrah! Hurrah! Civil War Soldiers 'Invade' Middletown

Re-enactors give a glimpse of the life of a union soldier at the Middlesex County Historical Society's Gen. Mansfield House.

More than 100 people visited Saturday's Civil War Encampment and Re-Enactment at the Middlesex County Historical Society, named for Middletown's own Gen. Joseph King Fenno Mansfield, who lost his life in the Battle of Antietam in 1862.

The event marked the 150th anniversary of the Civil War and of Mansfield's death on Sept. 18 of that year.

Former Official State Troubador Tom Callinan regaled visitors with period songs on a circa 1800 banjo and 1900 guitar — and even played a song by 19th-century composer, Middletown-born Henry Clay Work, "Marching Through Georgia."
