Middletown Gets in the Season With 'Holiday on Main'

The downtown celebrated the holiday season with the announcement of One Book Middletown: Ready Player One by Earnest Cline.

Main Street Middletown was the place to be Friday evening as the 27th annual Holiday on Main kicked off with a parade led by the Middletown High School band from in front of Holy Trinity Church all the way to South Green.

Mayor Dan Drew, his family and Santa boarded the horse-drawn carriage and promenaded all the way to South Green, led by the MHS band, where awards were given out to Middletown third-graders for good citizenship and the One Book One Middletown selection was named by the mayor — Ready Player One by Earnest Cline.

Holiday On Main Street is a Downtown Middletown event that began in 1985 when the trees on Main Street were decorated with white lights and there were some events on the Saturdays between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Over the years, this event has grown to include the Lighting of the Tree on the South Green, followed by a Parade to the Middlesex Chamber to light the tree on the roof on Friday evening, the day after Thanksgiving, with many events throughout the day and night; and continues on four Saturdays before Christmas.
