Flood in Photos: Connecticut River Waters Advance, Recede at Harbor Park

Middletown Patch and intrepid photographer David Bauer photographed the Connecticut River at Harbor Park over the weekend as the waters rose and fell.

Update Sunday 6 p.m.

Former Middletown Councilman and photographer David Bauer visited the Connecticut River Saturday evening, as he does often to chronicle the sunset, and captured these images of the mighty Connecticut River at the peak of its flooding at Harbor Park.

Middletown Patch photographed the river as it began to overflow its banks on Saturday morning, then again on Sunday morning. Here's what transpired over the weekend.

Portions of Harbor Park in Middletown are under water as large downpours in the last week have forced the Connecticut River to flood its banks.

The boardwalk at Harbor Park is submerged, as is the gazebo area, but according to staff, the Mattabesett Canoe Club will remain open, as waters have not yet broached the front or back entrances.

At 10 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey, the river level in Hartford was 18.46 feet, which means here in Middletown, the river is between 9.6 and 10.5.

Eight feet is the river flood stage at Harbor Park in Middletown. The Mattabesett Canoe Club owners know if the river forecast is 10.5 feet, there will be minor flooding — and start moving furniture and other objects onto the second-floor back deck of the restaurant.

In 2012, the U.S. Geological Survey discontinued operation of the Middletown gauge due to federal funding reductions, Middletown's Planning and Zoning's website.

To determine possible crest levels during a flooding, a calculator provides an estimate based on 46 years of comparisons between Hartford high water crests and Middletown high water crests.

On average, a predicted crest of more than 20 feet will crest in Middletown 12 hours after the crest in Hartford, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

As waters continue to rise over the next day or so, the potential for moderate flood stage (12 to 15 feet in Middletown) means the following areas are at risk:

  • 14-15 feet- First Floor of Harbor Park Restaurant
  • 14-15 feet- Intersection of River Road and Eastern Drive
  • 12-15 feet- Palmer Field
