UPDATE: CT River Tops 11.4 Feet in Middletown

The spring freshet has arrived in Middletown and with it comes flooding of the low-lying area now home to the Mattabesett Canoe Club.

Middletown's Harbor Park was a lake Sunday as the Connecticut River, swollen from spring meltwater, over-topped its banks flooding low-lying areas. The freshet is especially dramatic here with the rising water flooding the park and the restaurant — the former yacht club — at river’s edge.

At any other time of year, the restaurant, re-christened the Mattabesett Canoe Club, offers breathtaking views of the wide Connecticut sweeping past Middletown and Portland on the east bank, the high, swift river flowing between low hills in the distance.

Inside, while workers ready the canoe club for an Easter day opening, the waters continue to rise, with debris clogging the river-margin.
