It’s a long Columbus Day weekend, and the weather looks promising. Meriden offers plenty of outdoor fun, from a Friday night football game to Family Day at the Linear Trail. Here's your chance to get out there and enjoy some fresh air and fall foliage.

Why Go: Friday night football is a fall tradition--and a great way to catch up with friends. (Other football options for the weekend: Maloney is away at Bulkeley Friday night at 7 p.m. if you’re a Spartan fan and up for a road trip. Wilcox Tech plays Bacon Academy on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Falcon Field. )

When/Where: Saturday, October 8, 4:30 p.m., Lyman Hall High School, 70 Pond Hill Road, Wallingford
Why Go: Prepare to be impressed. The 100-plus–member Maloney High School Spartan Marching Band is the largest student performing ensemble in the city, and one of the largest in the state. They just launched a to raise money for much-needed new uniforms. You can check them out in person at this competition.
When/Where: Saturday, October 8, 5 – 6:30 p.m., Meriden Grange Hall, 540 Broad Street
Why Go: String beans, mashed potatoes, roast pork with apple sauce, Cindy's famous coleslaw and dessert. ‘Nuf said. (Takeout is available.)
Pricing: $10 for adults, $5 for children
When/Where: Sunday, October 9, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. (Poker Run registration starts at 9 a.m.), Meriden Humane Society, 311 Murdock Avenue
Why Go: If you like to ride motorcycles, join in the Poker Run that starts at the Bradley Diner and makes five stops before winding up at the Meriden Humane Society. Or just join in the Family Fun part of the day, featuring food, live music, games, raffles and more to benefit the city’s no-kill animal shelter.
Pricing: The Family Fun Day is free. The Poker Run costs $20 per rider, $10 per passenger.
When/Where: Sunday, October 9, 1 – 2:30 p.m., Linear Trail at Red Bridge (near QRWA headquarters, 540 Oregon Road)
Why Go: The weather should be warm and sunny. The leaves are starting to turn. What better day to take a nature walk led by wildlife biologist Peter Picone or try a free canoe lesson on Hanover Pond? This event is sponsored by the Meriden Linear Trails Committee.
