Battle-Hardened Veteran Recounts Lessons Learned in Baghdad

Middletown Police Officer Al Kim, awarded a purple heart for his wounds, reflects on the U.S. pullout from Iraq after nearly nine years of war.

Middletown Police Officer Al Kim of the decorated Connecticut National Guard's 143rd Military Police Company was deployed to Iraq in April 2003. Kim was seriously wounded when his Humvee was blown up by a roadside bomb June 29.

Despite all the troubles in the war-torn country, Kim, 41, deeply hopes Iraq will progress toward democracy, the Hartford Courant reports.
