HOSPITAL RECEIVES GRANT FOR COMMUNITY GARDEN

The Middlesex Hospital Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Department has received a grant from the Middlesex United Way Women’s Initiative to sponsor a 1,200 square foot community garden plot. The plot, located on Long Lane in Middletown, can provide enough fresh vegetables to sustain 30-40 MCH families throughout the growing season (July - November). In addition to free weekly vegetables, participating MCH families will be provided with a uniquely designed and identified family friendly plot to visit and contribute to maintenance and harvesting. Families will be offered educational opportunities to learn about vegetable gardening and be provided with recipes, vegetable preparation tips and cooking techniques.

The goal of the project is to ensure that families have access to fresh produce and opportunities to learn about vegetable gardening and using vegetables in meal preparation through direct experience and expert guidance.
