Help is Coming for Children Facing Emotional or Behavioral Challenges

When a child is suffering from emotional or behavioral challenges, a family's resilience is put the test. But, with support and appropriate intervention, children and families can learn to cope and avoid crisis.

Residents of Middletown and surrounding towns will soon have a new resource to help them address their children's disruptive emotional and behavioral challenges. The Village for Families & Children will begin offering its Extended Day Treatment (EDT) program in Middletown this spring.

EDT is a successful program that provides a structured environment to help children develop and practice social and coping skills to build success in school, at home and in the community.

"We are very excited about being able to bring this program to families in the Middletown area," said Melissa White, associate vice president of programs with The Village. "We work with children to help them set goals, learn to express their feelings and deal with conflict in healthy, productive ways. We also provide support and guidance to families - to connect them with other resources in the schools and community and build a foundation for success for their children."

The 6-month after-school program is open to children ages 5-12. Activities include individual and family therapy, peer and family group therapy, art and physical activities and therapeutic play groups.

Last year, 98 percent of children in The Village's EDT programs did not require hospitalization, intensive treatment or out-of-home placement while in the program. As the largest provider of the EDT program in the state, The Village has been offering the program in Hartford, Meriden and Manchester.

The program will be located 282 Main Street Ext, in the Sanseer Mill building. For more information about EDT, visit www.villageforchildren.org or contact Melissa White at mwhite@villageforchildren.org or 860-236-4511 x3703.
