High School Students Sought for Popular Summer Arts Program at Wesleyan

The Capitol Region Education Council (CREC)’s Center for Creative Youth (CCY) seeks talented high school students to apply to participate in the 37th annual Summer Arts Residency program. The deadline for applying is March 1, 2013. The pre-college program will take place from June 30 – July 27, 2013, on the campus of Wesleyan University, in Middletown, CT. CCY offers students four weeks of intensive study in one of nine (9) arts disciplines. All courses are taught by professional artist/instructors, and student programming includes afternoon interdisciplinary elective classes.

Students also attend concerts and live events weekly, have opportunities to perform and exhibit their work at Wesleyan’s Center for the Arts facilities, participate in leadership training seminars, and develop lifelong friendships in a community of gifted and talented young artists from all over the country and abroad. “I felt like I was in a professional environment with people who are passionate about dance,” shared Kayla McGill of East Hartford, Dance student in the 2012 CCY class. "I have better technique now and have a more professional background. I’m more flexible and stronger than I thought.”

Highlights of this summer’s program include three Summer Artist Residencies by internationally known artists who will offer Master Classes and workshops. Students also have access to all university facilities, including practice rooms, dance and art studios, computer labs, darkroom facilities, athletic center, and libraries.

Academic credit is available from many districts throughout the state. Students entering 10th, 11th or 12th grade, who demonstrate talent and/or potential talent are encouraged to apply as soon as possible for this residential-only program.

Applications can be downloaded online at www.crec.org/ccy or can be requested by emailing ccy@crec.org.

Costs of the program include $2,000 for tuition and $1,600 for room & board, totaling $3,600. This cost includes all meals, tickets to concerts, and the cost of all trips. Entry into the program requires an audition, interview, and letters of recommendation. Auditions and interviews will be held during March 2013 in Hartford, Middletown, New Haven and Bridgeport. Some financial aid is available, based on need and talent. Students can apply for financial assistance by completing the Financial Aid Form in the full application. Late applicants should call the office to inquire if there are openings in their art form.
