UPDATE: 35-40 MPH Winds in Middletown

Update: 9:21 p.m.

WTNH 8 Meteorologist  Steve MacLaughlin just posted a severe thunderstorm warning until 10 p.m. for Fairfield, New Haven, Western Middlesex counties. He tells Middletown Patch wind gusts are now 35 to 40mph. CL&P is reporting 108 homes in the city without power.

Late-day gusts prompting wind chimes to trill musical fragments and trees to sneeze long and rustling exhalations will up the ante by 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Middlesex County is under a high wind warning through 6 a.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Fox CT meteorologist Rachel Frank says what you're seeing out there is expected to escalate. For Middletown, Frank forecasts, "increasing wind. Periods of heavy rain, damaging winds. Worst wind, rain, 8 p.m. to 1 a.m."

Gil Simmons of News 8 says he's looking at a "rough line coming through with incredible rain, T-storms and severe winds from 8-11 p.m."

Our forecast is better than the rest of Connecticut — Fairfield, New Haven and Litchfield are under a tornado watch.

See WTNH live doppler wind gusts here. According to WTNH, "once gusts exceed 40 mph, the likelihood of a lot of downed trees, and potentially lots of power outages are possible."

Power outages are modest now — 67 of Middletown's 22,589 CL&P customers are without power just before 5:45 p.m. See the outage map for current conditions.

CL&P customers who lose power may call (800) 286-2000 to report the outage. Always assume downed wires are live and stay at least 10 feet away, CL&P warns.
