U.S. News: City's Two Public High Schools At or Below Average

The 2012 rankings of best high schools in the United States reveals Middletown High and Vinal students on average perform middling to substandard when stacked up against others nationwide.

 

U.S. News and World Report released its 2012 rankings of best public U.S. high schools and both of the city’s secondary education institutions scored at or below the state average.

fared better than , according to the data, in student-to-teacher ratio, math proficiency and reading proficiency. College readiness is only tested at Middletown High.

Information was culled from the U.S. Department of Education, among other sources, according to U.S. News.

Only two high schools in Middlesex County were in the top 37: Old Saybrook at number 11, nationally ranked at 365 and Valley Regional at number 22, nationally ranked at 841 out of nearly 22,000. The top-ranked school in Connecticut is East Hartford’s Connecticut International Baccalaureate Academy and subsequent four are Conard High School in West Hartford, Ridgefield, Weston and Westport's Staples highs schools.

Middletown’s results

  • Student teacher/ratio: Middletown High: 13-to-1; Vinal: 10-to-1.
  • College readiness: MHS, 17.8 percent (near CT average).
  • Math proficiency: MHS, 67 percent (below CT average); Vinal 84 percent (near CT average).
  • Reading proficiency: MHS, 71 percent (below); Vinal 80 percent (below).

has a 3-to-1 student-teacher ratio and scored below state average in math and reading.

At Middletown High, U.S. News reports, students may take Advanced Placement coursework and exams and the participation rate is 27 percent. “The student body makeup is 51 percent male and 49 percent female, and the total minority enrollment is 42 percent.” See more detailed information on Middletown High here.
