A North Haven teen is facing burglary and identity theft charges after Middletown Police say he stole electronics, cash and credit cards from a Wesleyan University dormitory.
On Nov. 25, a Wesleyan student called police to report his dorm at Foss Hill had been burglarized while he was showering. Missing was an Apple computer worth $1,600, a leather wallet with $60 inside, a cell phone valued at $600, a credit and debit card, the report says.
A man was later stopped by police on a motor vehicle violation was found with two stolen credit cards he allegedly said he got from a man named Fred who breaks into buildings at Wesleyan, stealing electronics and selling them at stores in the North End of Main Street, then using the money to buy crack cocaine.
He gave a description of a man which matched a teen found by police on Liberty Street then walking on Windward Street. Ferdinando V. Giano, 19, the arrest report details, admitted to the burglary and others in the past at Wesleyan.
Police say Giano used the credit card to buy lunch, cigarettes and an Apple iPad, then sold it for $200 to an employee of a business on Main Street.
Officers determined Giano has a pending arrest for possession of drug paraphernalia in North Haven. Police say he admitted to the robberies to support his cocaine addiction, the report says. Upon investigation, Giano came up as a missing person out of North Haven, so police called his family; the report says they said he needed help and didn’t want him home because he would reoffend. As an example, police were told Giano had left a Rushford program after three days.
He was charged with third-degree burglary, third-degree larceny, second-degree forgery, third-degree identity theft and illegal use of a credit card.
