Crews Converge on Connecticut River

Head of Connecticut Regatta draws thousands to Harborpark.

The Head of the Connecticut Regatta was a thrilling mix of prowess, strength and acumen, as athletes from around the state powerfully rowed their shells toward the finish line.

Shouts of “Ready, UP! Walk it forward” and “walk it FORWARD, waist and down,” filled the morning air Sunday as thousands of high school and college students, parents and spectators populated every spot of riverfront view for the 35th running of the Head of the Connecticut Regatta.

Those who know Harborpark and the Mattabasset Canoe Club were astonished at the transformation that took place in the morning hours as hundreds of sculls and Lycra-suited boys and girls, women and men, converging upon the park, boardwalk and restaurant. Each crew team consisted of an elaborate tent, hot and “grab-it” food, drink, grilling and T-shirt-selling station.
