Community Joins Elementary's Walk to School Day

Hundreds of Macdonough School students, parents, teachers and staff marked the year's first Walking Wednesday alongside Mayor Drew, former Mayor Giuliano, Principal Romeo and firefighters.

With a truck's lights flashing, grandly marking the start of the 10-minute walk down High Street from Grand to Spring streets, students in kindergarten to fifth grade carrying colorful balloons and sporting school tees jovially talked and laughed their way to class.

Mayor Dan Drew, who donned a black Macdonough School Men's Team T-shirt, accompanied Fire Marshal Al Santostefano and the families along the entire route, which ended in the school cafeteria, where former Mayor Sebastian Giuliano, who has read to students and mentored them over the years, greeted children.

The event was followed by a school-wide SURFS Up assembly, where donated eight lucky students with refurbished bicycles — a reward for students with exemplary attendance.
