China and Floral Finery Make For a Fanciful Afternoon Tea

The Friends of Long Hill Estate and Guests Dress to the Nines and Enjoy Tea and Finger Foods to Benefit the Wadsworth Mansion

For some people, there is nothing more exciting than the convergence of beautiful things — in this case it is china, silver and flowers that was brought together at the formal afternoon (or "low") tea hosted by the Friends of Long Hill Estate Sunday at Wadsworth Mansion in Midletown.

More than 26 unique tablescapes were designed and presented for this annual fundraiser in the East  and West Ballrooms to benefit the mansion.

Original owners of the mansion, Clarence and Katharine Wadsworth, often hosted such extravagant parties.

Tea was served with three courses of sandwiches, biscuits and assorted desserts.  Many vendors sold clothing, hats and jewelry. Trenz: A Boutique did a brisk business.

The afternoon and the tables were in full bloom with color, light, sparkle and the warmth of women enjoying each other’s company.

A special recognition was given to two women there in spirit this year — a remembrance of Barbara MacEachern and Patricia Evans was given by chairwoman of the Tea Committee, Ona McLaughlin, who asked those in attendance pause and remember their many contributions to the Friends of Long Hill Estate.

Both were known for their love of flowers and beautiful things, which included recognizing the “diamond in the rough” that the Wadsworth Mansion was more than 15 years ago, McLaughlin said. They advocated for its restoration through a bond referendum in cooperation with the City of Middletown.

"We usually raise about $3,000," through the event, says McLaughlin. "The tea is not a huge fundraiser for us, but it is an event that showcases the mansion. Part of the mission of the Friends is to showcase the mansion and there is no other event that does this quite like it is the tea."

"You cannot match the creativity that comes out in that event."
